The Phone Call
The Ending We Didn’t See from “Grissom’s Divine Comedy”
Grissom needs a pick me up, what better than a phone call from Sara?
Submitter Notes: SPOILER! For Grissom's Divine Comedy (season eight)
“Hi.” Grissom said after noticing the phone number. It had been the same phone number from the same disposable phone for the past five months. It was her. Sara.
“You’re mother is insane. You’ll never guess what she did to me today.” Sara started out saying. Grissom chuckled. He knew his mother well enough to have a good idea of what crazy thing she might have done to Sara.
“What’d she do now?” He asked with a smile on his face.
“She threw a head of lettuce at me when I cam home.” Sara explained. Grissom roared with laughter at the thought of Sara dodging the lettuce as she entered the walkway. “It’s not funny. She told me that she ‘forgot’ that I was coming over. She’s senile.” Grissom just continued to laugh. After he regained his composer, he explained to Sara:
“My mother isn’t senile, she my mother. Once I came home early from my apprenticeship at the morgue, she threw a bag of carrots at me.” He answered with a chuckle. Then he thought out loud: “You never really expect them to spatter like that.” Sara laughed.
“And here I thought your father was the quirky one.” She said.
“My father was the normal one. And he was nuts!” Grissom replied fondly. Just then, a coughing fit came over Grissom. It was so bad, he expected to pass out.
“You sound horrible. Tell me you’re getting rest.” Sara begged.
“I’m getting rest.” Grissom repeated.
“Now tell me the truth.” Sara demanded.
“There was what was thought to be a serious gang related murder and I was demanded to go back to work.” Grissom explained. He told Sara about his last case and how at many times, he had just wanted to go to sleep on the lab floor.
“If you die, I’m suing that bit**.” Sara said.
“Who Maddy? Sara, relax, I’m not dead yet.” Grissom said.
“I know. But she’s lucky I wasn’t there I would of-” Grissom cut Sara off.
“You have taken the case for me and yelled at Maddy later.” Grissom stopped her. He heard Sara’s soft sigh. “How are classes going?”
“Harder than I remember.” She replied. She sounded tired.
“Yeah, whoever thought that applied aerodynamics in theoretical physics would be hard?” Grissom joked. Sara had been studying for months in order to get her Masters degree and she was well on her way to getting it. She expected to be done by October.
“I love you.” She said. She was dozing off; Grissom could hear it in her voice.
“I love you Sara. Hang up and go to bed. I’ll always be waiting for you.” He promised.
“And I’ll always come back to you.” Sara answered. It was their automatic response. They would promise themselves to each other right before they went to bed. It was the only way they could sleep. Sara hung up the phone and Grissom followed suit. Gil looked at his droopy faced dog and smiled.
“Come on boy, time for bed.” Grissom declared. Hank went inside and lied down at the foot of the bed while Grissom undressed. Gil then crawled into bed and fell asleep. He dreamt of Sara that night, as he always did.
