Prologue

Once in a small picturesque town there was a beautiful kind woman named Kikyou who lived in a large house on a hill at the edge of town. She was a great healer and everyone loved her and went to her with their ailments instead of going to the town doctor. The town doctor himself often consulted with Kikyou. But as the years went by Kikyou began to change. The change was subtle but felt by all. She had an aura of evil about her and the townspeople began to avoid her only venturing to the house on the hill when someone was in dire need of her help. Then one night she disappeared and washed up three days later in a river.

It was a general opinion of the townspeople that the caretaker killed her. He was a gruff silent young man who never spoke to anyone but Kikyou. The townspeople were convinced that he'd approached her romantically and became enraged when she rejected him and killed her. Unfortunately there was no proof and the townspeople were too afraid to say anything about it. So life went on and the caretaker continued to take care of the house while the heir to Kikyou's possessions was searched for.
