Back at Home:
chapter 17
Frost and the kids have a battle of their own.
Frost had been keeping a close watch on Crystal. He was now back at the house; he being upstairs, her being down. He sat on his couch with a cold beer in his claws, thinking about what had happened. About an hour after Iron had left, Crystal had woken up as he was carrying her home. But rather then be like her normal self, she was still under the influence of the Soul-eater and attacked him.
But he had stopped her attack with one icy blast that put her back to sleep. To ovoid another attack, he brought her down stares (when he got home) and chained her up in Iron’s chains and left her down there. Afterward, he had grabbed a few beers and started to drink. The dragons rarely drank, but tonight he made an exception.
He went to bed drunk, and was still a little drunk the next night when the kids came.
“Frost, are you alright?” Katelyn asked him with Orion at her side.
Frost’s speech was a little slurred, but he managed to say,
“Nah, I’m a little buzzed is all.”
He leaned back in his couch and closed his eyes.
“Every thin’ is fallen’ apart.” He added.
“What do you mean?” Orion asked.
“Well Iron’s off doin’ Draco knows what. Crystal’s not her self. An I’m stuck on the side lines doin’ nothin’ but waitin’ and wachin’.”
“Is there anything we can do to help?” Katelyn asked.
“Yeah. Go in the kitchen an’ get me another beer.”
“I don’t think you need one. How about some water instead?”
“Whatever.” He said.
And then he laid down on the couch and grabbed the blanket from the top of the couch and tucked himself in.
“Tonight’s the last night or Crystal’s gonna die. It’s all up to Iron now.” He said.
“What are you talking about?” Orion asked, but it was too late, Frost was asleep.
The kids stayed with him for a few hours. But by midnight, Katelyn had another bad feeling in her stomach like before. The room was starting to grow colder; she wondered if it was Frost’s doing.
“Frost, wake up. You’re making the room cold.” She said, shaking him.
He grunted in response.
“No seriously Frost.” She said to him.
“S’not me. I’m sleepin’.” He mumbled in a whiny tone.
The window suddenly shattered; that woke Frost up. His eyes popped open at the sound and he said,
“We’re not alone; somebody’s here.” And then he sat up.
“You’re done sleeping off your hangover already?” Orion asked.
“Stay on the task at hand! I sense something!”
“Frost, what does it feel like when you sense something?” Katelyn asked.
“It depends on the person or being. Why?
“’Cause I have this feeling in my gut that we’re not alone like you said.”
Frost growled as he thought for a moment.
“Well whatever it is, we’ll deal with it later. Right now you two come down stairs with me. Crystal’s down there and she’s isn’t herself, so keep your distance.” He ordered.
So they made their way downstairs. Crystal let out a growl when she saw them and tried to reach for them, but the chains held her in one place.
“I’m sorry again Stair-gazer.” Frost said to her.
And then he walked over to the computer and pushed a few keys on the keyboard. He turned to Orion,
“Find something that has properties like we’re facing.”
Orion nodded and started to type franticly on the keyboard. Katelyn was staying behind Frost the whole time, her finger tips always touching his wings or shirt. Frost turned to her,
“Katelyn, you know where my gun is, right?”
She nodded.
“Can you go get it for me?”
Even though she was scared and didn’t want to leave him, she left and got his gun. He walked over and rummaged through a drawer and got several clips that glowed different shades of green.
“Any news of what we’re facing yet?” Frost asked.
“Your data base says it’s a Specter.” Orion replied.
