Because of her treatment of them, neither Daphne nor Bramwell will speak to Catherine, so she approaches Flora to see if she can find out anything, since she gets along very well with them. What she finds out is surprising, to say the least, to both her and Morgan. Not too long afterward, however, Catherine gives birth to a daughter, biologically Bramwell's but officially belonging to Morgan.

Morgan and Bramwell have a heated confrontation, and it takes their wives to calm them down. In the end Morgan departs, and the newly rich individuals resume their meal. Later on Catherine comes by the Old House and Bramwell tells her off once and for all.

Bramwell is gone for many hours, waiting at the docks, but when his ship finally comes in ... so does many millions of dollars and the start of a whole new life for him and the ladies in his life. He even takes them out to a fancy restaurant to celebrate and his snobbish cousin (and Catherine) show up ... and there is the inevitable confrontation.

It is discovered that both sisters are pregnant, and Bramwell is enjoying every minute of how the knowledge of this makes Catherine feel. Daphne and Catherine even have a confrontation on the subject. Later on, after resting for a time, Catherine seeks out Flora and discusses things with her.

Daphne and Bramwell come back early without telling anyone. After Morgan locates Catherine, she has a big surprise in store for him...in more ways than one. Upon awakening the following day, the younger man seeks out his brother Quentin and tells him what happened; as he listens, Quentin reflects on his own marriage and the wrongness of the current beliefs on the subject.
